UPDATE 03.17.2021 – While we are awaiting official guidance from the Oregon Health Authority on summer overnight camps, we are very hopeful that we’ll be able to return to Camp Rosenbaum in a limited scope in 2021! The continued rollout of vaccines, declining infection rates in Oregon, and schools returning to in-person learning all are giving us optimism that we will be able to safely hold camp this July. Camper recruitment will begin in April – please contact your housing authority to see if they are participating! Since 1970, Camp Rosenbaum has offered a unique experience to low-income children from Oregon and Southwest Washington. Campers travel by bus to Camp Rilea on the Oregon Coast, just south of Astoria. It’s there that they spend a week experiencing new adventures, making friends and building memories to last a lifetime.
While at Camp Rosenbaum, children enjoy traditional activities like art and science projects, leather crafts, horseback riding and fishing. Kids take trips to the ocean, participate in the sand castle contest and tell stories around the campfire. While at Camp Rosenbaum we also encourage children to take responsibility for their lives, emphasizing the traits of being a good citizen, staying in school and making good choices. We remind each of our campers that they have the power to shape their future.
We have a one-to-one camper to staff ratio, with staff who have decades of experience. All of our staff and counselors are volunteers, comprised of an extraordinary partnership between the Oregon National Guard, Portland Police Bureau and Home Forward. We’re proud to have a staff full of such amazing inspiration for our campers.
Camp Rosenbaum is open to boys and girls ages 9-11 whose parents live in housing authority properties, or who participate in the Section 8 rent assistance program. Campers are recruited by the participating housing authority. Housing authorities typically open recruitment in April to select campers for the year.
